Health and Nutrition

At AKC Frenchie Puppies, we believe good health starts with proper nutrition, preventative care, and a clear understanding of the unique needs of the French Bulldog breed. Frenchies are affectionate, compact companions, but their short-faced structure means owners should pay particular attention to weight management, exercise, temperature, breathing, and overall wellness.

Our goal is to help every family give their French Bulldog puppy the healthiest possible start and build good habits that continue into adulthood.

Routine Veterinary Care

Regular veterinary visits are an important part of responsible French Bulldog ownership. Your veterinarian can monitor your puppy’s development, body condition, dental health, skin, eyes, joints, heart, breathing, and overall wellbeing.

Your veterinarian should also guide you on an appropriate schedule for:

  • Vaccinations
  • Deworming and parasite prevention
  • Flea and tick prevention
  • Heartworm prevention where relevant
  • Dental care
  • Weight monitoring
  • Spaying or neutering discussions
  • Nutrition and feeding adjustments

The AKC provides additional educational resources for owners on maintaining puppy health from the time a puppy arrives home

Supplements and Homemade Diets

Supplements are not automatically necessary for every healthy puppy eating a complete and balanced diet. Adding vitamins, minerals, or other supplements without professional guidance can alter the nutritional balance of a puppy’s diet.

Likewise, homemade diets require careful formulation. WSAVA emphasizes the importance of properly formulated diets and qualified nutritional expertise when evaluating what to feed a dog. WSAVA

Before starting supplements, raw feeding, or a homemade diet, speak with your veterinarian or a qualified veterinary nutrition professional.

Food Changes and Sensitive Stomachs

When changing your puppy’s food, a gradual transition is generally easier on the digestive system than an abrupt switch. Your veterinarian can help determine an appropriate transition schedule based on your puppy’s individual needs.

Persistent vomiting, diarrhea, appetite loss, unusual weight change, itching, or other concerning symptoms should be discussed with a veterinarian rather than managed through repeated diet changes alone.

Skin, Coat and Facial Fold Care

French Bulldogs have a short coat that is relatively easy to maintain. Weekly brushing can help remove loose hair and distribute natural skin oils.

Their facial folds require additional attention. Keeping wrinkles clean and dry can help maintain healthy skin. Regular nail trimming, ear checks, and dental care should also be part of a Frenchie’s grooming routine.

Exercise and Everyday Activity

French Bulldogs enjoy playtime and regular activity, but they generally do not require extreme exercise. Short walks and supervised play can help maintain healthy body condition while providing important physical and mental stimulation.

Because Frenchies can experience breathing difficulty during strenuous exercise, particularly in hot or humid weather, the AKC recommends avoiding excessive exertion under those conditions. American Kennel Club

Exercise needs will vary from puppy to puppy, so gradually build an activity routine and discuss any breathing, mobility, or exercise concerns with your veterinarian.

Healthy Portions and Weight Management

Maintaining a healthy weight is especially important for French Bulldogs. Excess body weight can put additional strain on the joints and may worsen some health concerns already associated with the breed.

Your veterinarian can help determine the appropriate daily portion according to your puppy’s age, weight, activity level, and individual development. Treats can be useful during training, but they should be given in moderation and should not replace a nutritionally complete diet. The AKC also recommends limiting high-fat table scraps and monitoring a Frenchie’s calorie intake and body weight.
